The work situation in Italian archaeology in analyzed focusing on women's academic position. The discussion involves first the distribution of women in the hierarchy, then describes the different access to the academic teaching according to the geographic distribution of Italian universities and to the relevance of the subject (in our country classical archaeology is by far the most important). Moving to the research topics the development of women's contribution in particularly in the study of Italian prehistory in this century is discussed. The historic development is analyzed by means of major journals and reviews.
